Specific Knowledge of music videos

Correct target audiences is vital in order for a music video to be a success. You need to make sure your target audience is being reached through your video. This is vital for the success of the music video itself  as you want your product to be reaching the right type of people in order to make the most capital from it. You need to make sure the target audience is being reached through marketing in ways they will see you are releasing a music video for example. Pop video market it on chart music alternatives on adds on Spotify breaks etc. Girl groups such as Little Mix speak often of power in there videos and artists such as Dua Lipa and new rules is about the teaching to girls of being stronger and powerful of not falling into the same cycle of going back to the same boy. The large group of girls shows power. This would be targeted at young vulnerable girls. Target audiences decisions include; sexuality, age, location, ethnicity, gender, class, education and lifestyle.

  •  Music videos need to have interesting elements that visually carry the whole video. Music videos can often be used to spread patriarchal messages as they can reach a huge range of people through their music and can access the fans easily for example Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry to spread issues society is facing as well as politics.
There are various videos that are used;
  • Performance music videos; make the audience solely focus on the performance.
  • Concept videos; hold no story line, not related to any lyrics and are based solely on the artists ideas only, making them unique.
  • Narrative music videos; no lip syncing involved.
There are two types;
  • Thematic -field, barn = country.
  • Symbolic- build up to the meaning of the video over time.
Typical imagery that is found is down to factors such as what type of music genre. For example pop videos will normally involve current trends in their video as they normally target teenage audiences that listen to typical chart music.  Symbolic imagery is often found within music videos. Within Louisa Johnsons song she speaks about and tells the story of homosexuals and the loss of a loved one. The use of the most recent fall of Grenfell Tower in a poverty driven area speaks about the loss of loved ones through imagery of the tower block and residents. This presents resilience and unity through getting Stormzy from the same background to be an artist within the piece as well as other famous singers. The reason for Stormzy and other rappers to be in there is because they are too from deprived backgrounds and therefore, it is easier for people in the position they used to be in and living the same lifestyle to relate to their music. Funds are not always raised for the artist and record label but instead to raise capital for current tragedies and housing for those whos houses burnt down.

Location of the music video need to meet the demands of those in the same type of industry for example in pop videos you would need to create the dream atmosphere that people would expect from the bubbly energy. For example in rap videos you would expect gangster looking big time rappers with big gold chains tons of 'bling' designer clothing such as Prada, Moncler and Gucci with fast cars such as Ferraris, girls in minimal clothing throwing signs at the camera using low angles to show dominance and money from the lavish location of mainly mansions. Making young boys etc desire to be like these rappers who act as their role models. Music videos are heavily set and given away by the locations of the video. Stereo typically half naked girls exposing themselves fit into rap videos and money being thrown around in the videos.

Places found in music videos are normally domestic settings. These are normally where the basis of the story of the music video begin. Use of a domestic setting is used within Andra Day with Rise Up and Eminem Love the way you lie.  Secluded areas, huge party sets- clouds, candyfloss, themeparks and churches are often used in videos from artists such as Katy Perrys 'Chained to the Rhythm'.

This will help when it comes to making my own music video as i will now be able to break my music video down into key features. From imagery, places, location and target audiences in order to make sure all aspects of my video are successful. Furthermore, this will help because i now know the three different types of music videos and can make sure mine fits specifically into one category. I also need to make sure that my music video can be seen as an escape for the audience and it takes them somewhere else in their mind.
